MS Boys Basketball Team Wins KAIAC Championship
Written by Greg Peterson, Middle School Boys Basketball Assistant Coach
Pressure never rattled the MS boys basketball team, as the Guardians remained composed and captured their first KAIAC championship in school history at SFS on Saturday, March 14.
The tournament began with a strong showing in pool play, where YISS went undefeated against SFS and Chadwick. In both matchups, the Guardians showcased relentless defense and excellent team communication, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.
Earning the #1 seed, YISS advanced to the semifinals to face #5 seed SIS. The Guardians came out with intensity, establishing an early offensive rhythm and securing a 27–15 victory in a game marked by contributions from every player on the roster.
In the championship game, YISS faced #2 seed KIS in a tightly contested battle. The Guardians’ offense was led by All-KAIAC selections Dan C. (8) and Jayden K. (8), who made key shots and facilitated ball movement. After building an early lead, YISS faced a determined comeback from KIS, with the score tied at 17 in the final moments.
With under eight seconds remaining, the Guardians maintained possession. Jayden K. drove into the lane and converted a contested running floater to give YISS a 19–17 lead. A final defensive stand sealed the victory, and as the buzzer sounded, the team rushed to center court to celebrate their historic championship.
The season’s success reflects the team’s focus, growth, and determination. Special recognition goes to head coach Jesse Beam and assistant coach Greg Peterson for their time and dedication throughout the season.
