LEARN, LEAD, EXCEL

At YISS, we empower students with a rigorous education to become tomorrow's leaders. We aim to instill a love of learning in our students that endures beyond graduation.

EXPECTED SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING RESULTS (ESLRs)

In the pursuit of learning, developing spiritual identity, relationships, and core character, a YISS student is…

SPIRITUAL & CHARACTER EDUCATION

Within a diverse community, YISS emphasizes both spiritual and character education in our classrooms, chapels, assemblies, special events, and service-learning opportunities. Spiritual education involves the deepening of students’ knowledge of and relationships with God, while character education involves examining ideal character traits and learning how to practically live as people of character.

PROGRAMS

  • The NICS program provides opportunities for character and spiritual growth. Our hope is that students deepen their understanding of the Gospel message, are encouraged to live a life of worship, and embrace what it means to know Christ and make Him known.

  • Oasis is a community where faculty and students seek to imagine what a life of character and service to others looks like. Together, we create an environment in which we can challenge one another to pursue such a life with passion and integrity.

WEEKLY SEMINARS

  • Weekly chapel services provide students with an opportunity to worship God through music and the message of Scripture. The students participate in worship and hear Bible-based messages from our chaplains or guest speakers. Chapel provides students with another way to discover more about God and learn what it means to follow Jesus Christ.

  • Oasis Assemblies, or Ossemblies, take place with all Oasis-program students, hosting speakers and activities to engage students and equip them with lifelong skills. Through these activities, students grow in their understanding of character qualities together. Ossemblies work towards equipping students to make a lasting impact on the world by serving people with compassionate hearts and practical wisdom.

Learning Support

We believe every child can learn and learn well. With an individualized approach, our Student Learning Support (SLS) teachers and English Language Learners (ELL) teachers provide the necessary guidance and scaffolding to help our students set and reach their learning goals.

  • Our team of certified educators and paraprofessionals serve as advocates for students with learning differences. SLS Instructional Delivery Methods include:

    • Instructional support from the SLS teacher in general education classroom using the inclusion model

    • Instructional support during SLS Study Hall

  • The ELL program is designed to help students become more effective in English communication for success in a competitive academic and diverse social environment. ELL Instructional Delivery Methods include:

    • Scheduled Beginning and Intermediate ELL classes

    • ELL instructional support from the ELL teacher integrated into general education classrooms

    • ELL writing lab with facilitated support from ELL teacher

SERVICE LEARNING

At YISS, through community events, service trips, and classroom projects, our students work to make a difference in our world. Throughout each year, the YISS community takes part in various service projects and trips including the Oak Tree Run, Operation Christmas Child, the middle school Week Without Walls and Immersion programs, and the high school Guardian Outreach and Education (GOES) program.

  • YISS Elementary School hopes to inspire and teach our students what it means to be generous and step outside of themselves; but ultimately, we long to see our students grow into adults who actively contribute to the lives of others.

  • Middle school students engage in service-learning through the Week Without Walls and Immersion programs, learning the importance of practicing stewardship by serving people both locally and abroad.

  • High school students engage in service-learning through the Guardians Outreach Education and Service (GOES) program as well as through various service-oriented student club opportunities. YISS GOES seeks to provide students with cross-cultural, service-learning, small-group experiences by which they can develop a passion to become lifelong servants and impact their world with the gifts and talents they have been given.
