Elementary Basketball Girls Build Confidence Through Teamwork
Written by Stacy Treviño, Elementary Assistant Principal and Elementary Girls Basketball Coach
This spring, the 4th and 5th grade girls’ basketball team experienced a remarkable season of growth, both individually and collectively. The season began on March 14 as YISS hosted the first ES Jamboree. With only one practice completed, the team stepped onto their home court with determination. While the results were not what they had hoped for, the experience marked the beginning of their journey together.
Over the following six weeks, the girls committed themselves to developing fundamental skills. Practices focused on ball handling, footwork, passing, shooting, and defensive positioning. As these individual skills strengthened, the team also learned to make decisions under pressure and collaborate effectively during game situations. Through engaging drills and games like “Sharks,” keep-away, and dribble tag, players built both game awareness and a genuine love for basketball.
On April 25, the team traveled to KIS, ready to put their hard work into action. Across five games—including a challenging double-header—their progress was clear. What began as a group of individuals had become a cohesive, supportive team. Players encouraged one another on and off the court, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and growing confidence.
From well-timed passes to strong rebounds and confident shots, the girls showcased how far they had come. Their dedication and spirit defined the season.
