Elementary Students Perform at KIMEA Choral Festival

Written by Jessica Lien, Elementary Choir Teacher

On Saturday, March 21, YISS students in 3rd-5th grade traveled to Dwight School Seoul for the 2026 KIMEA Elementary School Choral Festival.

In January, interested YISS students submitted online auditions, and 16 were selected to participate. In preparation for the festival, these students attended four after-school rehearsals and learned five songs at home so they could confidently perform their sheet music on festival day.

On the day of the festival, students joined peers from Busan Foreign School, Calvin Manitoba International School, Daegu International School, Fayston Central Campus, International Christian School Pyeongtaek, Korea International School, and Dwight School Seoul for a full day of rehearsals. From 9:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., they worked together to refine their music, with breaks for snacks, lunch, and recess. The day concluded with a community concert showcasing their collaborative efforts.

For young musicians, events like this offer a valuable opportunity to grow beyond the general music classroom. Students not only develop their vocal skills but also learn from experienced directors, connect with peers who share their passion, and rise to the challenge of performing advanced repertoire within a short time.

Participating students and attending parents thoroughly enjoyed the joyful celebration of music and collaboration. While the festival location changes each year, students in third to fifth grade can look forward to the opportunity to participate next year.
