Varsity Boys Soccer Team Grows Through Adversity
Written by Andres Jaramillo, Varsity Boys Soccer Coach
The YISS boys varsity soccer team entered the KAIAC season with momentum after capturing the ACSC championship in the fall. Led by a strong senior class—including captains Sky J. (12), Boaz L. (12), and Andrew L. (12)—the Guardians aimed to build on last year’s semifinal run.
Despite a slow start caused by injuries and unexpected absences, the team showed resilience early on, earning its first win of the season with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over KIS at home. From there, the Guardians steadily improved, fueled by consistent performances from sophomore Matt K. and freshman Kangmin L.
One of the team’s most impressive outings came in a narrow loss to eventual champion Chadwick, where a disciplined and determined effort—highlighted by senior Andrew L.’s defensive leadership—demonstrated the team’s competitive spirit. Later in the season, the Guardians battled SFS to an exciting 3–3 draw at YISS, showcasing their attacking potential and determination.
The regular season concluded on Senior Night against GSIS, where the team honored its graduating players. Junior Ian K. delivered a standout performance, scoring four goals in a memorable match that provided momentum heading into the KAIAC Cup.
In the KAIAC Cup quarterfinals, the Guardians faced SIS in a tightly contested match that came down to the final moments. Despite a strong effort, SIS secured the win with a late goal off a corner kick.
The season officially concluded on April 25, with YISS finishing third in the regular season standings and fifth in the KAIAC Cup. Notable late victories over GSIS (3–1) and CDC (2–1) reflected the team’s continued growth and determination.
Throughout the season, the Guardians demonstrated resilience, unity, and perseverance in the face of adversity. The challenges they encountered—and the lessons they learned—will serve as a strong foundation for future success.
