Students Rise to the Challenge at Battle of the Books
Written by Pedzi Viriri, Elementary School Media Specialist
On April 25, fourth and fifth grade students traveled to Dwight School Seoul to take part in the annual Battle of the Books (BoB). The event brought together teams from eight international schools, creating an exciting environment that celebrated reading, collaboration, and friendly competition.
YISS was represented by two teams, YISS 1 and YISS 2, made up of dedicated fourth and fifth grade students. Beginning in November 2025, participants read 10 books consisting of five 2025-2026 Morning Calm nominees and five “companion” books selected by the Korean International Librarian Association. By Trimester 3, most had completed the list, showing strong commitment and enthusiasm for the challenge. Students were coached and guided by Mrs. Viriri and Mrs. Peterson once a week after school. At the event, Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Peterson served as judges, while Mrs. Viriri, Mrs. Yim, and Mr. C. Chan served as coaches.
Both YISS teams showed determination and teamwork throughout the competition. YISS 2 progressed through each round, advancing to the semi-finals and then the finals, where they achieved an impressive second-place finish and brought home a trophy. In addition to the main competition, students participated in a creative side quest in which they channeled the ESLRs to design a “teamcatcher” inspired by one of the battle books. The presence of supportive parents added to the sense of community, reflecting the strong partnership that defines YISS.
Congratulations to all the YISS students who took part and represented their school with pride. Events like these continue to encourage literacy and inspire students to develop a lifelong love of reading.
