Book Swap Finds New Homes for Books Both Near and Far

Our YISS community came out in full force this year for our annual Book Swap. The event kicked off with a call for community members to drop off their gently-used books in the main lobby from January 15 to February 2. With books pouring in from week one, Co-Chairs Annie Park and Lilly Huang stayed busy throughout the entire three-week collection period dedicating countless hours to cross-checking Book Swap forms with book titles, sorting books by reading levels and genres, managing participant lists, distributing Book Swap vouchers, and setting up and overseeing the selection days from February 13 to 15.

The response was overwhelming, with a staggering 3,000 books amassed from 165 participants, spanning across all levels from elementary to high school, as well as YISS staff. Our students and staff never cease to amaze us, a testament to a school community brimming with both dedicated readers and generous people eager to give and share. The collection boasted not only high-quality reads but also a diverse array of titles to cater to every taste. The annual Book Swap at YISS was a resounding success this year, thanks to the unwavering support and enthusiasm of our school community.

During the selection days, it was delightful to witness students eagerly perusing the shelves, selecting books not only for themselves but also for their families. The event's smooth execution is attributed to the support of PTO, volunteer parents, and high school students, who lent their support in moving, sorting, and aiding students in their book choices. Their collective efforts genuinely exemplify the heart of our YISS community.

The spirit of generosity extended beyond our immediate community, as the remaining books were graciously donated to the Little Library Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building libraries in Cambodia. This collaboration underscores our shared belief in the transformative power of reading and education, and we are privileged to support their noble endeavors through our Book Swap.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate continued interest and participation in the Book Swap, as it serves as a beautiful way to provide people with quality reading materials by finding new homes for books and fostering a lifelong love for reading.
