Students Participate in Prestigious AMIS Asian Music Festivals
Written by Christian Davis, Director of Bands
From March 25-29, 2026, eleven YISS band and orchestra students had the opportunity to participate in AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) events, including the Middle and High School Band Festival in Taiwan, the Middle and High School Orchestra Festival in Shanghai, as well as a new Composer’s Symposium.
Over the course of the festival, students had the chance to perform alongside talented peers from international schools around the world, collaborate with expert conductors, and enhance their musicianship through intensive rehearsals and ensemble work.
These festivals were held at the American School of Taipei and Shanghai American School Pudong, bringing together students from across Asia. Throughout several days of rehearsals, students refined their technique, learned new repertoire, and prepared for the culminating gala concert. The final performance showcased the students’ dedication and musical growth, highlighted through expressive ensemble playing and individual solos that reflected their passion for music. John L. (12), Inho K. (10), Nayoon L. (8), Pauline K. (8), Lana S. (8), Serene H. (12), Helen J. (11), Judy K. (7), Michelle C. (8) went through a rigorous audition process to participate in this festival, and we are so proud of them for representing YISS with excellence at each of these festivals.
This was the first year that AMIS piloted the Composers’ Symposium, and it was a huge success! Alongside the orchestras, the internally selected Composers' Symposium offers student composers the opportunity to workshop their pieces with experienced mentors and peers, developing their creative voice, strengthening their compositional skills, and learning the art of collaboration and revision. Ashton S. (11) and Tommy K. (12) were selected to participate in this festival and greatly enjoyed this creative process!
The festival provided an inspiring environment for musical development, cultural exchange, and lifelong memories. Participants returned to YISS motivated and enriched by the friendships, artistry, and experiences they gained through representing our school at such a prestigious international event.
