YISS MUN Team Competes in Jeju

From February 16-18, the YISS Model United Nations (MUN) team traveled to Jeju to compete in the Global Education City MUN conference (GECMUN), held at the Jeju Shinhwa World conference center on Jeju Island. After a day of team-building exercises, students participated in the conference alongside over 250 delegates, representing 18 schools from South Korea, Saipan, and Taiwan.

Our team featured 16 delegates who collaborated on committees to solve a wide range of issues, including food security, the water crisis, climate-change-driven natural disasters, the war in Ukraine, the 1945 Yalta conference, mafia criminals in the Roaring Twenties, and the cultivation of a second Earth in the 30th century. In addition, five YISS students (Rhea R., Jay C., Rachel K., Audrey Y., and Emily S.) chaired two committees and one student (Siyeon L., 12) led as a deputy secretariat-general.

It was a unique and creative conference where our students’ creativity, public speaking skills, and research abilities were stretched and expanded. Overall, six delegates won individual awards and our team received the award for outstanding delegation (similar to a second-place award).

Mr. Pash and Ms. Dooley would like to commend the whole team on a job well done and congratulate the following students on their individual awards:

Best Delegate: Carsten H. (10)

Outstanding Delegate: Claire L. (10)

Honorable Mention: David C. (11), Mia M. (9)

Verbal Commendation: Sharania M. (10), Catherine K. (10)

The MUN team is scheduled to complete our season by competing in the DartMUN conference held in New Hampshire from April 7-9, 2023.
