Middle School Holds Exciting Art Exhibition

This year’s middle school art exhibition was held at the YISS main lobby from April 8 to 28. The featured works demonstrated the bold ideas, unique perspectives, and good skills honed by the students throughout the school year. The Analytical Cubism-inspired pieces were especially intriguing because they broke up objects into shapes that were drawn from three to four vantage points, giving you a whole new way to look at familiar things. It mimics the experience of viewing the world through a kaleidoscope, displaying a scene full of unique shapes and vibrant colors.

The still-life subjects consisted of a moped, cellos, boots, and a motorcycle helmet. Another art movement-inspired project was the Surrealist pieces, which dove into the students’ imagination. The pieces were strange in the best way, showing off dream-like scenes and unexpected color and shape combinations.

Also on display were the beautiful still-life drawings that used chiaroscuro, known as a style of incorporating strong contrast and shadows. These showed off the students’ ability to apply tonal gradation skills and give a realistic, almost dramatic feel to even simple subjects like metallic objects.

One also shouldn’t miss the gelli plate print portraits! These works were painstakingly drawn with graphite pencils and combined with textures, transferred onto paper using printing inks and gelli-plate sheets.

Last but not least, the repoussé, a form of relief sculpture on zinc plates, were made using imagery from cultural references and were shaped using tools and techniques that gave form to the students’ ideas.
