Students Take Meaningful Action to Support Clean Water Access
Written by Courtney Pakos, Middle School SLS/ELL Teacher
Students in Mrs. Pakos’ class are transforming classroom learning into meaningful action through the Iron Giraffe Challenge, a schoolwide fundraiser supporting the organization, Water for South Sudan. Through the initiative, students are raising both awareness and funds to help address water scarcity in South Sudan.
Inspired by their study of the novel “A Long Walk to Water,” students have taken initiative in educating others on water scarcity and the global water crisis.
The Iron Giraffe Challenge, named after the powerful machines used to drill wells, officially began on April 30 during Middle School Field Day with a 3K race. All students were invited to participate by running or walking in support of the fundraiser.
In preparation for the event, students in Mrs. Pakos’ class took on leadership roles across campus. To raise awareness, students organized a guest speaker from Water for South Sudan to share insights and answer questions. They also created a public service announcement to educate middle school students about the importance of water access. Jin shared, “I want my classmates to know that water really matters. It matters not only to the students at YISS, but to all the people around the world.”
Through their research, students gained new perspectives on global water issues. Sergi reflected, “I was surprised how many people do not have access to clean water.” Anna added, “That even getting a single clean glass of water can be a big challenge for others.”
Students also organized a bake sale during lunch to contribute toward their fundraising goal. Beyond raising money, the experience strengthened friendships and encouraged teamwork within the class. Neviah shared, “My favorite part was the bake sale. We all got to work together, have fun, and raise a lot of money. I am proud of that. We also became closer as a class.”
For some students, the project sparked a desire to continue helping others. Ryan emphasized the importance of service, saying, “Helping others is important. I think we should do more to help. I would like to go to South Sudan, see how they build wells, and learn how to build one myself.” Sanghyun added, “It felt really good going to other classes and talking to students about the fundraiser.”
A strong sense of purpose motivated students throughout the project. As Azilyn shared, “I like helping others, and it is for a good cause!” Through collaboration, creativity, and leadership, students in Mrs. Pakos’ class are demonstrating how learning can extend far beyond the classroom. Their efforts not only raise awareness about global water access, but also invite the entire YISS community to participate in making a meaningful global impact.
This event highlights how students are applying their classroom learning to make a real world impact. It reflects the school’s commitment to service, global awareness, and student leadership. The fundraiser also brings the community together around a meaningful cause, encouraging students, teachers, and families to take part in supporting access to clean water while celebrating student initiative and compassion.
