YISS MUN Repeats Excellence at GECMUN XII

Written by Saeyoon Sim, Student

From March 6 to 7, the YISS Model United Nations team traveled to Jeju’s Global Education City to compete in the 12th Global Education City MUN (GECMUN). This year’s conference hosted over 400 students from 18 schools across five countries, where 22 YISS delegates took home 13 individual awards, as well as the Best Delegation award for the second year in a row.

After arriving in Jeju, the team bonded by visiting the bowling alley and karaoke before diving headfirst into debate on a myriad of topics. YISS delegates saved Jamestown from a devastating winter, alleviated the otherwise catastrophic OPEC oil embargo, and facilitated diplomatic discussions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In addition to 19 active delegates, three students chaired committees, including Claire S. L. (12) and Saeyoon S. (11), who ran the Business Committee, and Seunghun L. (11), who managed the Specialized Committee.

Despite stiff competition, several of our delegates were commended for their excellence in their committees:

Best Delegate: Olivia L. (11), Khanh D. (11)

Outstanding Delegate: Katie C. (12), Kate L. (11), Olivia S. (10)

Honorable Mention: Kaiden H. (12), Hannah K. (11), Dillon K. (10), Elisa M. (9)

Verbal Commendation: Sia K. (12), Jaewoo C. (10), Lily C. (9)

Best Chair: Seunghun L. (11)

Following a successful season, the MUN team concluded by showcasing YISS excellence at GECMUN, a trend the team strives to continue next year!

The team would like to thank Mr. Smith for traveling to Jeju with the group as well as Mr. Suhany and Ms. Kim for their support and leadership throughout the year.
