ES Students Impress at the 2025 Battle of the Books
On April 12, 21 enthusiastic elementary students traveled to Gyeonggi Suwon International School (GSIS) to compete in the annual Battle of the Books (BoB). The event brought together teams from eight international schools to promote reading, teamwork, and friendly competition.
YISS participated with two teams, YISS 1 and YISS 2, made up of 10 fourth graders and 11 fifth graders. Preparation for the competition began in November 2024, when students were required to read 10 books (5 Morning Calm books and 5 buddy books) and take notes to qualify for the competition. By the end of winter break, most students had completed the reading list, demonstrating impressive commitment and enthusiasm.
The BoB ASA officially began in Trimester 3. Mrs. Viriri, the elementary librarian prepared and shared practice materials with students and parents, while Mrs. Peterson graciously assisted with the practice sessions. At the competition, students were supported by Mrs. Garrick, Mrs. Palisuri, Mr. Benedict, and Mr. and Mrs. Peterson as coaches, timers, and judges.
YISS 1 advanced to the semi-finals and ultimately earned a remarkable third place finish, bringing home a plaque in recognition of their achievement. The students also participated in a side quest, where students were challenged to design a crest inspired by one of the battle books, showcasing their creativity and teamwork.
Congratulations to all the YISS students who participated and proudly represented YISS! Let’s keep promoting literacy and inspiring young minds to develop a lifelong love of reading!
