Yongsan Singers Head to Taiwan for ACSC Festival

The YISS High School Choir “Yongsan Singers” participated in the ACSC Honor Choir Festival at Morrison Academy in Taichung, Taiwan, from March 2-4. The students worked with other music teachers and choral students from ACSC schools across Asia under the direction of guest conductor Dr. Jamie Hilman, Associate Professor and Director of Choral Studies at the University of Toronto.

The festival consisted of two full days of rehearsals and ended with a concert for the Morrison community on Saturday, March 4. In addition to rehearsing and performing, the students engaged in service projects and cultural experiences.

All choir members and directors visited a group home in Taichung where they performed for the students who live there. In return, our host students also treated the ACSC members to performances as well. The students at the home then took groups of ACSC students and taught them how to do many of the skills they learn while living at the group home including woodworking, leather working, laser cutting, and weaving. Both groups of students learned from and collaborated with each other for an entire afternoon, culminating in some new friendships. Some of the students from the home were even gracious enough to support and attend the final ACSC performance.

The YISS Music Department was excited to provide its choral students with an international music festival experience for the first time since the pandemic and is looking forward to many more.
