YISS Guardian Roundup: January 2024

YISS wants to recognize and celebrate the talent and hard work of our students who excel in activities and competitions that take place at a high level both inside and outside of school. In this edition of our Guardian Roundup, we are thrilled to highlight the following students and their recent accomplishments:

Freshman Woosung L. is a Korea national chess player in the U16 league. In November, he competed in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy, where he scored 5.5 points after 11 rounds to rank 79th in the world in the U16 Open category. Woosung delivered a strong performance earning a performance rating of 2000 and winning the most games among Korean players at the 13-day championship event, which gathered over 500 chess players from around the world.

Jesse A. (8), Jua K. (5), and Jane L. (5) teamed up to snag 2nd place at the KJGA International School Junior Golf Championship in October at the Seopyeongtaek Golf Club. Jua took first place in the 5th-6th grade girls’ division. It was a strong showing among 23 participants from other international schools.

Claire L. (11) published a 139-page book on how science and technology impact society through the Korea Youth Honor Society. The book’s ISBN is 979-11-9704290606 and can be found at the National Library of Korea and the Namsan Library. Claire has contributed eight pieces for publication in KYHS’s collective journal, Unseen, and plans to continue writing more papers and publications post-high school.

Sophia O. (2) blazed to victory at the 9th Gwacheon Mayor’s Cup Ice Skating Competition in Gwacheon City, claiming 1st place in her age group with a time of 44.06 seconds.

At the Uichang Sports Center in Changwon, the Ice Hockey Club, featuring Jin K. (6), Linden C. (6), Hailey C. (6), Kellan H. (6), Taiwon Y. (5), Joseph K. (4), Kyrie C. (4), and Chase L.
