Dads’ Club Prevails in 18th Annual Turkey Bowl
Written by Tony Lee, Dads’ Club Representative
The 18th Annual Turkey Bowl, the beloved soccer showdown pitting the YISS Dads’ Club (DC United) against the YISS teachers and staff, was held on Saturday, November 22. As always, the game consisted of three action-packed 30-minute periods.
After team introductions were announced by the returning dynamic emcee duo, Mr. and Mrs. Moore, the players made their dramatic entrance by ripping through paper banners held by the enthusiastic elementary cheerleaders. The stage was set for another classic encounter.
The first period saw DC United come out with blazing intensity. Jin Oh opened the scoring with the first goal of the game, followed quickly by a strike from John Lee. Chris Luck added a third, giving the Dads’ Club a commanding 3-0 lead before the first whistle blew.
The second period saw no let-up from the Dads' Club offense. Da Beum Shin was the star of the middle session, finding the back of the net twice to score both the fourth and fifth goals of the game. Despite the Staff Team fighting hard to find their rhythm, they entered the final break trailing 5-0.
The final period remained a spirited affair. Jon Frederick drove home the sixth goal for the Dads, capping off their scoring run. The Staff Team, however, refused to go home empty-handed. They finally got on the board in the final quarter thanks to a penalty kick coolly converted by Bryan Lee. When the final whistle blew, DC United had secured a decisive 6-1 victory to take home the trophy.
The post-game celebration allowed the entire community to come together for the traditional turkey lunch, featuring a delicious spread of mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, dinner rolls, cookies, and pumpkin pie. A massive thank you goes out to the Dads’ Club, PTO, volunteers, photographers, and sound support for their hard work. Thank you to the fans for making the 18th Annual Turkey Bowl an exciting community-wide event!
