Stephan C. Wins First with Original Composition

YISS junior, Stephan C., won first place in the high school division for the KIMEA Composition Competition 2021. For months, students among participating schools worked to compose an original piece of music with criteria given by KIMEA. The theme this year was called “The Old Meets the New.” For this theme, students were encouraged to compose a fusion of classical and contemporary styles and submit them in December.

KIMEA strives to encourage students to connect and explore music as an international community in Korea. There are multiple events that KIMEA hosts that are performance-based, but this event allowed students to explore the world of composition with helpful feedback from judges.

Stephan’s composition, entitled “Marching Towards the New,” won the high school division. After looking at the feedback from Stephan’s piece, it was clear that the judges believed it was well done and were very impressed with the maturity in his work.

Congratulations, Stephan! Listen to the audio for his piece here.
