Middle School Falls in Love with Reading

Written by Kimberly Kershner, Middle School Principal

During the month of February, our middle school community celebrated Reading Appreciation Month with a Valentine’s Day–inspired theme, “Fall in Love with Reading.” Throughout the month, students participated in a variety of meaningful and engaging experiences designed to deepen their connection to books and to one another.

A strong culture of reading was evident across campus. Students explored new genres, exchanged book recommendations, and discovered ways to engage with reading that felt both personal and social. Activities included reading with elementary buddies, participating in literary lunches, joining a creative “shelfie” contest, and selecting “blind date” books that encouraged them to step outside their usual preferences. These experiences helped students view reading not simply as an academic task, but as a source of enjoyment, discovery, and shared experience.

One highlight of the month was the “Reading Roads” music video, created by Mr. Krahn in collaboration with middle and high school students. The video captured the energy of the celebration and showcased the creativity and enthusiasm students brought to their reading journeys.

Reading Appreciation Month served as a meaningful reminder of the role reading plays in student growth—not only academically, but also in fostering empathy, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. Thank you for your continued support in nurturing a vibrant reading culture at our school.
