YISS Musicians Perform in KIMEA MS Honor Band
Written by Christian Davis, Director of Bands
YISS Middle School Band students shined bright at this year’s KIMEA Honor Band Festival, joining outstanding young musicians from 14 international schools for an inspiring day of music-making at Chadwick International School.
On January 27, 28 YISS musicians—selected through a rigorous audition and nomination process across our three middle school bands—were placed into skill-based ensembles. These included the Blue Band, led by Mr. Ross Jones of Korea International School for emerging 6th and 7th graders; the Red Band, directed by Mr. Conrad Hutchins of Daegu International School for intermediate 7th and 8th graders; and the Gold Band, conducted by Mrs. Sophie Holbrook of Seoul Foreign School for advanced 7th and 8th graders.
The groups of students from the various international schools rehearsed intensively throughout the day before presenting a thrilling evening performance. The festival highlighted not only the students’ musical growth, but also the unifying power of music as performers from varied backgrounds came together to create something truly special. Our YISS band students thrived under the guidance of expert guest conductors, showcasing remarkable talent, dedication, and passion alongside new peers.
A meaningful highlight of the event came when Mrs. Holbrook reflected on the spirit of KIMEA, noting that these gatherings provide opportunities to build friendships while creating beautiful music together. Unlike many other events centered on competition, KIMEA emphasizes collaboration—bringing students and teachers from across Korea together to rehearse, learn, and perform as one ensemble, showcasing the unity and life-giving power of music.
Heartfelt thanks go to host Mr. Georgian Sherd of Chadwick International School, chaperone Mrs. Hyemin Lee, and our supportive YISS parents for fueling these future musicians’ pursuit of excellence. It is such an honor to teach and support the amazing students of the YISS band program.
