Theatre Students Celebrate Achievement at Thespy Awards

Written by Samantha Treme, ITS Member

On May 20, the International Thespian Society (ITS) celebrated another successful year of theatre with its annual theatre awards ceremony, known as the Thespys.

The Thespys is our opportunity to recognize the students and faculty who helped bring life to this year’s shows, “Bringing Down the House” and “Annie,” through acting, technical work, leadership, and service to theatre. Awards were presented to those who demonstrated exceptional achievement and dedication throughout the season.

Filled with celebration, laughter, and reflection, the evening featured performances showcasing the experiences of actors, technicians, and crew members, as well as special acknowledgment for graduating senior thespians whose dedication and contributions have influenced the theatre program throughout their years at YISS. It was also a special moment to honor and express gratitude towards the former troupe director, Ms. Terry, who has played an instrumental role in directing YISS’s theatrical productions over the past eight years. Her passion for theatre inspired classes of students to grow in their craft, embodying the excellence that defines the theatre program today.

The ceremony was also an opportunity for students to be inducted as official members of the International Thespian Society, joining a global network of students committed to merit and service in theatre. At YISS, the society represents a community that exemplifies the collaboration, creativity, and enthusiasm valued in arts education, and supports our productions in various capacities.

ITS’ enduring motto is taken from poet Alexander Pope’s words: “Act well your part, for therein all the honor lies.” Students and faculty advisors took on this spirit both on and off stage, pouring in countless hours during the rehearsal process. The students were especially thankful for their faculty advisors’ supportive mentorship across the season as they took on key responsibilities; their time and care strengthened each production.

The year brought not only accomplishments but also meaningful bonds that shaped the sense of community YISS celebrates in theatre. Congratulations to all of this year’s thespians for a memorable theatre season!
