Varsity Girls Volleyball Triumphs as KAIAC Champions

Building on the legacy of past successful seasons, the YISS varsity girls' volleyball team embarked on a remarkable journey filled with challenges, growth, and ultimate triumph. Graduating six seniors paved the way for a new era as the team welcomed many new players, setting the stage for an exciting season of rebuilding and forging a fresh team dynamic.

The initial weeks were a time of intense growth and team-building, though not without trials. Undeterred, each game became a stepping stone for the team's evolution, inspiring them to strive for loftier goals. As the KAIAC regular season concluded, the girls stood at a 5-5 win/loss record.

The turning point of their season unfolded at the ACSC Tournament in Penang, Malaysia, where the team showcased their full potential against international school teams from Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan from October 18 to 21. The competition was fierce, but sportsmanship was high as the teams bonded during fun events and service projects.

The teams organized an English-speaking volleyball training session for a local school. Smiles were seen all around as the players taught foundational skills and cheered on their students. A "cultural experience" event in Georgetown further deepened the bonds as players explored unique food stalls, vibrant street art, and lively shops. These experiences built camaraderie amongst the teams even as they faced each other on the court.

Through hard work, the team excelled and performed at an incredibly high level. Slowly, the girls’ skills and confidence began to soar. The team overcame challenges and difficult competitors and fought their way into the semi-finals against Morrison Academy from Taiwan. Adapting to many different styles of play, the team worked strategically to overcome their competition. They powered through with grit and positivity, all while growing closer as a team. The girls found their rhythm as they approached the semi-final match and had a strong performance, getting mere points away from the championship before ultimately falling to a tough 5-set loss in the semi-finals. Despite entering the tournament seeded No. 4, the YISS team displayed remarkable unity and cohesion, overcoming challenges and earning a well-deserved third place finish. YISS players were honored at the ACSC Closing Ceremony as the team received their medals and trophy for their hard-earned third place finish. Individual excellence shone through as Diane L. (12) and Christina K. (12) were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Diane receiving the coveted Best Passer award.

The ACSC Tournament was an amazing opportunity to connect with other schools from Asia and experience new cultures and experiences. In addition, it was a catalyst for immense growth for the team! The passion and friendships strengthened during the tournament would equip the team well to finish their regular season strong.

Fueled by newfound passion and camaraderie, the team swept through the KAIAC finals with back-to-back 3-0 victories over Chadwick and SFS, teams they had previously struggled against. In a dramatic 5-set final against Osan, they clinched the 2023 KAIAC Championship title, culminating in tears, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of victory.

Several YISS players were also individually honored for their dedication and skills shown during the KAIAC Tournament. Chloe S. (9) received MVP and Best Server, and Ellie F. (11) received the Best Hitter award. Chloe S. (9), Diane L. (12), Ellie F. (11), and Avery S. (11) also received the KAIAC All-Tournament award, while Amiah D. (10) received the KAIAC All-Conference award.

At the YISS Fall Sports Banquet, the following players also received awards:

  • Spirit Award: Faith K. (12)

  • Guardian Award: Chloe L. (12)

  • Coach’s Award: Christina K. (12)

  • MVP Award: Diane L. (12)

As the curtain fell on the 2023 YISS girls varsity volleyball season, it marked not only a season of incredible growth and achievement but also a testament to the enduring spirit of teamwork, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. The girls' volleyball program eagerly anticipates the future, poised for even greater accomplishments on the horizon.
