Fourth Grade Learns S’more About Energy Transfer

In March, our fourth-grade students had fun testing their homemade Solar S’more Cookers in the spring sunshine. Students have been studying energy transfer and constructed their own solar cookers out of simple materials to discover how energy from the sun is transferred. They melted the chocolate and marshmallows using aluminum foil, boxes, and even plastic wrap.

Some students chose to try out their solar energy on ramen noodle cups as well. Though none of the water started boiling, the heat did soften the noodles enough to eat. After being able to experience what they had been learning about in a hands-on way, students had a deeper understanding of how energy is transferred, as well as a tasty snack.
