ACSC Boys’ Soccer Competes in New Climate in Thailand

With just two and a half weeks of practice under their belts, our boys’ soccer team flew to Thailand to face off against the other five teams in the ACSC conference, marking the first return to play in several years during the pandemic. Of the six teams competing, YISS was the only team to participate during their soccer off-season. Even with the challenges of being out of season and in a new climate, our Guardians fought hard throughout the tournament, finishing fourth place overall with four ties and one loss.

Among our team, some players were recognized for special awards. Caleb Paik won the best Goal-Keeper Award (The Golden Glove) of the tournament. Also, Taehun Kim, the team captain, and Caleb Paik were selected as all-tournament players. The Guardians were also one of two teams nominated for the sportsmanship award by the coaches at the end of the week.

When thinking back on the tournament, captain Taehun Kim said, “It was really fun, and I am extremely proud of our team for the results we obtained despite the fierce competition we faced.”

Fellow all-tournament player, Caleb Paik, also added, “Being the underdogs, we played against tough teams, but we still pulled through and played better than we thought. Overall, it was a great trip.”

Some players, like vice-captain Luc Mercier, gained valuable experience, saying, “One lesson I learned was that I still have so much room to grow, not just as a player, but an individual as well."

Besides the numerous soccer matches, there were also times of meaningful collaboration for all players and coaches from each school to engage in service for local communities. The service projects included: facilitating a soccer camp for children, repairing and repainting a community center, and making traditional massage compresses for the elderly.

The coaches and all the players would like to show our deepest gratitude to our wonderful team managers Jaimie Ha and Sofia Shin for supporting us in so many ways, and we would also like to thank Mr. Hale for taking care of logistics and Mr. Maxwell for traveling with the team.

Lastly, thank you to all of the teachers, staff, and parents who supported the boys throughout the tournament!
