Middle School Serves Local Needs with Food Drive

The Middle School Service Club at YISS looks to put values into action. During this year’s SEW, we were introduced to the Korea Legacy Committee (KLC) and its mission to support the elderly living in poverty in Seoul. Students learned that despite Korea having one of the largest economies in the world, they also struggle with the highest elderly poverty rate in the world. Students were inspired and felt called to action, leading the Service Club to partner with KLC and raise food donations.

KLC identified eight food items that were in need. The Service Club then created food donation bins in each of the grade level hallways as well as the ability to order food online that could be directly sent to the KLC kitchen. From February 20 to March 6, the MS Service Club launched its food drive. We collected and donated rice, millet, shiitake mushrooms, gochujang, and various frozen items.

We are blessed to live in a community that aspires to give back, to encourage service learning, and live out its core values. For our students, we seek not just to teach about ESLR’s such as being “servant-hearted” or “compassionate,” but to provide opportunities to experience these values firsthand. The MS Service Club is one of many avenues to do this.
