7th Grade Collaborates in “The Social Planet” Project

Mr. Harrison’s 7th grade social studies classes participated in the second annual final project: The Social Planet, Inc. Representing countries from the regions they studied throughout the year, students teamed up to convince 2045 entrepreneur, the Honorable Neon Tusk, to place the trillion dollar Mars transport business in their countries.

The students divided into specialist roles related to History & Geography, Government & Economics, Energy & Population, and Tourism & Location. The students then combined their research and persuasive skills to show “Mr. Neon Tusk,” portrayed by various YISS staff members, how their country would be both a great home to the industry and how the company could benefit their country.

In the A Block class, Director of Technology, Dr. Jae Hwang, acted as Mr. Tusk, choosing the delegates from Kazakhstan as they creatively and convincingly responded to his questions about energy and geography.

During E Block, MS Instructional Coach, Mrs. Sarah Scott, selected the United Arab Emirates team for their detailed presentation and plan for the industry going into the future.

In G Block, 7th grade ELA teacher, Mr. Krahn, played the part and challenged the delegates to elaborate on key terms and facts. He chose the Portugal pair for their attention to detail and knowledge of their region.

Then lastly, in H Block, Ed. Tech. Specialist, Mr. Nick Steffen, selected Indonesia for their well-designed and cohesive bid for each topic.

The winning team members were awarded a certificate signed by Neon Tusk and WTO Director-General Harrison plus a candy treat bag for their excellence.

Through this type of activity, students were able to combine research, communication, and creative application skills to review and expand on the 7th grade social studies content that they learned throughout the year.

The Social Planet, Inc. was an exciting way to conclude the school year, mix in various school staff, and allow students to collaborate one final time before their summer break.
