YISS Students Selected for KIMEA National Honor Jazz Festival

By Mark Compaan Sep 27, 2017

On Friday and Saturday, September 22-23, YISS middle and high school students participated in the KIMEA National Honor Jazz Festival at Seoul Foreign School. In order to qualify to audition, students were required to play a traditional jazz band instrument (e.g., trumpet, trombone, saxophone, guitar, etc.). Most students made an audition recording in the spring to be selected for this festival. Students from various international schools were chosen to participate based on their audition tape and the needs of the ensemble.

All of the students worked together as one high school jazz band and one middle school jazz band, and each band rehearsed with a guest conductor for the two days. They also received training in their specific instruments during the sectional rehearsals. The students then performed a wonderful concert at Seoul Foreign School the afternoon of September 23.

YISS MS students who participated were:
Dakota Compaan (7)
Michaela Manni (8)

YISS HS students who participated were:
Jun Baik (12)
Darien Yang (12)

There were no awards given as everyone was working together in the ensembles. All high school participants received a National Jazz Honor Band patch that they could place on their letter jackets. We are proud of these students for being selected for this incredible opportunity to work with musicians from all over Seoul!
