The YISS Music Department has celebrated several outstanding achievements in October. The High School Concert Band and the Combined High School Orchestras traveled to KIS on Tuesday, October 23 to perform in the KAIAC Large Group Festival. The groups performed for three judges who are seasoned musicians and music educators. After the performances, the students were given a clinic by one of the three judges who shared insights regarding how to improve as an ensemble and identified strengths as well as levels of mastery.
The Concert Band, under the direction of Ms. Tori Palmer, received Unanimous Gold ratings from all three judges. A Gold rating is given for "Musical Excellence." The Concert Band was complimented on their balance, blend, and tempo consistency, as well as beautiful flute solos by Adeline K.(12), Hannah L. (11), and Haeli R. (10).
The Combined High School Orchestras, under the direction of Mrs. Lynelle Harding, was given special recognition by receiving Unanimous Platinum ratings. This is the first time in 'YISStory' that the orchestra has received this rating. It was awarded for a "Superior Performance (outstanding in nearly every detail)." The judges’ comments included, "consistently mature sound and musicality" plus "excellent intonation and balance."
The YISS choir was also proud to learn that Vanessa S. (12) and Stella J. (10) made ‘YISStory’ by successfully passing the audition for the Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS). This year's AMIS High School Honor Choir is going to be held at the International School of Beijing from February 27–March 3, 2019. Each student who auditioned prepared two vocalises plus one aria. The audition process was both blind and anonymous. Thousands of choir students from international schools worldwide participated in the audition, and only a small number of students were accepted.
Bravo to our YISS high school musicians on an outstanding job!
