Student Leaders Learn About Character and Stewardship

Mar 27, 2017

On Wednesday, March 1, high school students had the opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual REACH Student Leadership Summit, a one-day YISS-only student leadership summit. Dr. Ray Casey, CEO of Hagar USA, led the main plenary sessions and exhorted students to become the type of people and leaders who seek to develop their emotional intelligence (EQ) skills, continue their growth in character, be leaders who move from a "status" paradigm of leadership to a "stewardship" paradigm of leadership, and to focus on developing their own leadership capabilities as they seek to lead various clubs and teams. Students also spent time working in groups brainstorming ideas that could be implemented to continue helping YISS reach forward.

Concerning her experience, sophomore Lina Pak stated, "The Leadership Conference was a great opportunity for me to learn more about how I could grow as a leader and contribute to the world. Throughout the various activities and lessons I participated in, I realized that we could all be leaders in any given situation--because even the most insignificant situations in life call for leaders. Whether it's with friends, families, employees, or with people we have never seen before, everyone has the potential to influence and make society a happier place to live in. Leadership isn't about taking, but it's about giving what you already have. It's about taking the initiative to serve others. I learned so much from the Student Leadership Summit and plan to participate in it again."

We look forward to planning next year's Student Leadership Summit and hope to see you there.
