YISS was honored to welcome the former governor of Vermont, Peter Shumlin, on Thursday, November 16. Mr. Shumlin was an American politician belonging to the Democratic Party who served as governor of Vermont from 2011 to 2017. He was well known for signing critical laws such as the first genetically modified food labeling requirement in the United States and advocating for the closure of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.
The reason for Mr. Shumlin’s visit to YISS was to encourage high school students to study abroad and discover their potential and passions. He urged students to look for overseas opportunities, such as through the summer program founded by his parents, Putney Student Travel, to enrich their learning experiences. During Mr. Shumlin’s presentation, many students who are currently in the government class were able to ask questions of and interact with him through a Q&A session, making it a valuable experience for all who attended.
