YISS Varsity Cheerleading consisted of 15 students this year, ranging all high school grades. Around half of the team was new this year, bringing on the challenge of training, conditioning, memorizing, and performing safely with the advanced skill level expected of a varsity team. The team had a few injuries throughout the season, which brought about unexpected changes in positions. Although it was a challenge to "put the pieces together" in the best way, it brought strength and versatility as individual athletes and as a team.

On Saturday, February 10, 2018, the YISS cheerleaders participated in the 2018 KAIAC Cheer Competition, which was held at SFS. Although the number of participating schools this year was down to 12, the competition was still fierce. YISS participated in the Level 1 competition, having great execution of the first run of the routine in the preliminary round and moving through to the finals. The challenges of injuries and fatigue followed the team all the way to the end of the season, but YISS was able to secure 4th place overall in the Level 1 competition.

During the competition, YISS also had one student, Jenny K. (11) awarded the All-KAIAC award for individual performance. All-tournament patches were also awarded to three outstanding athletes: Captain Yoona L. (12), Co-captain Vanessa S. (11), and Katie C. (12). The varsity cheerleaders were very proud to have represented YISS at this year's competition and look forward to their next chance to compete.
