Children's Poet Laureate Ken Nesbitt Visits YISS

By Karen Henspeter Nov 22, 2015

YISS elementary welcomed beloved author, Kenn Nesbitt, to our campus on Tuesday, November 23. Nesbitt, who served as Children's Poet Laureate from 2013-2015, enjoys visiting schools around the globe and spreading the joy of humorous poetry with elementary students. He spent the month of November at international schools in China before stopping in Korea to visit GSIS, KIS, and YISS.

Mr. Nesbitt had the kids in stitches as he read and recited from his humorous anthologies. Fourth and fifth graders collaborated with him to write a funny poem about playing sports with food. In a later session, second and third graders recreated traditional nursery rhymes. "The students had huge smiles on their faces as they discovered the joy of poetry," Ms. Henspeter, Elementary Media Specialist, remarked. The kindergarteners and first graders attended a special session and enjoyed as Mr. Nesbitt shared three of his recent picture books. The highlight was an interactive reading of More Bears!

During the rest of the day, Mr. Nesbitt signed scores of pre-ordered books and enjoyed visiting with students who dropped by the library. Teachers also had the opportunity to attend a poetry workshop where he shared more about how to interest reluctant readers and writers with fun poetry.
Mr. Nesbitt's visit was full of laughter, giggles, and rhymes. What a great day!
