International Bazaar Showcases Cultural Diversity of YISS

Jun 5, 2018

The annual YISS International Bazaar was postponed to Saturday, May 19, due to a forecast of rain on its original date of May 12. Nonetheless, the much-anticipated event turned out to be a wonderful opportunity for the entire community to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of YISS.

Well over 2,500 people came out to enjoy the beautiful weather and everything that the bazaar had to offer. The courtyard was brimming with delicious foods from around the world. From kebabs, to curry, teriyaki, samosas, pad thai, spring rolls, tacos, dukbokki, and handmade hamburgers, the wide variety made choosing what to eat a difficult decision. Also in the courtyard was the raffle and silent auction. Hundreds of winners, young and old, were all smiles as they won one of over 400 prizes.

Parade of Nations

While people were enjoying their meals, they were able to witness several events on the main stage. This year’s Parade of Nations had a record number of 110 participants represent and carry the flags of the 57 nations of our YISS families. The colorful processional was a powerful display of the diversity at YISS.

Cultural Program

Later in the day, the Cultural Program provided over two hours of live music and beautiful dances from around the world. Performers did a fantastic job sharing the uniquenesses of various countries through their instruments, songs, dances, and cheers. Special thanks to our guests from the Gwangmyung Performing Arts Company for Teens for their captivating Korean sword and drum dance performances.

Activity Zone

The soccer field offered an array of activities for children of all ages, including a water gun zone, zorb balls, bouncy castles, face painting, crazy hair, water balloon toss, and even a preschool play zone courtesy of ECLC and other games and activities courtesy of Beyondsitter.

Once again, the main lobby was bustling with vendors offering new and used goods. From colorful handbags, to jewelry, clothes, shoes, sunglasses, handmade luggage tags, and toys, as well as a spectrum of services, vendors added much to the event.

Special thanks to our International Bazaar Co-Chairs Jisong Kim and Sookyung Kim for their amazing leadership and dedication and to the many teachers, staff, parents, and students who graciously helped coordinate everything from performances to food booths! We could not have done it without your talent and support!
