Making Waves at the Jingle Bell Splash!

By Bethany Stallings Dec 12, 2016

Holiday excitement was in the air at the YISS swimming pool on December 10. The Aquatics Department held its 6th Annual Jingle Bell Splash, a swimming competition designed with the Christmas season in mind.

Over 190 students from YISS, SFS, and Chadwick filled the pool deck, anticipating their individual events. Many students hoped their hard work in after-school swimming would show. The sport of swimming is one where athletes strive for personal bests by racing the clock. This year, students received a “Best Time” ticket for each race in which they beat their personal time. The tickets could then be taken to “Santa” and redeemed for prizes of varying value: 1 ticket items, 2 ticket items, or 3 ticket items. YISS Aquatics hoped this “Best Time” initiative encouraged student-athletes of all ages to pursue excellence rooted in personal time improvement as more important than placement and comparison to others.

A highlight from each Jingle Bell Splash was the Rudolph Relay. All willing participants “reindeer paddled” wearing antlers and a red nose down the pool lane where they then transferred their reindeer gear to one of their relay teammates. The unique relay made for an exciting time for all participants and parents to watch.

The Jingle Bell Splash continues to be one of the most popular and anticipated events on the Aquatics calendar. However, the school year is only half over. The pool still has many more exciting events planned for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year. Stay tuned for more swim events you can be involved in next semester!

Many thanks to all the parents, volunteers, the concessions organizers, and to “Santa” (ES PE teacher Ms. Prater) for their help and support!
