KIMEA Jazz Festival

On Saturday, September 1, select students from international schools across Korea participated in the annual KIMEA National Honor Jazz Festival. This event, hosted by SFS, presented both a middle school and high school jazz group. One high school student from YISS, Sean R. (11), participated as one of two tenor saxophone players in the band.

The middle school band was led by Dwight music educator and KIMEA jazz chair James Jang and was accompanied by a few members of the high school big band. The high school band had the privilege of working with guest conductor and performer Eric Miyashiro, a world-famous trumpet player, known for playing in the most internationally renowned big bands such as those of Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Meynard Ferguson, and more. The group performed a variety of pieces from early swing to a jazz rendition of the modern pop song "Happy." It was a night full of energy and excitement, leaving all the audience members tapping their toes on the way out of the auditorium.
